Purpose of the Tool
The NFT Profit & Loss Calculator is designed to help NFT traders and collectors accurately determine their financial outcomes from NFT transactions. In the volatile NFT market where prices can fluctuate dramatically, this tool provides clarity by:
- Calculating exact profit or loss from NFT sales after accounting for all costs
- Handling multiple currencies (ETH and USD) with automatic conversions
- Factoring in all transaction costs including gas fees and platform commissions
- Providing clear metrics like ROI percentage and absolute profit/loss amounts
- Helping with tax reporting by documenting precise financial outcomes
This tool is essential for both casual collectors and professional traders who need to track their NFT investment performance accurately.
Real-world Examples
Example 1: Successful Trade
Scenario: Purchased a Bored Ape for 50 ETH when ETH was worth $3,000. Sold it for 70 ETH when ETH was worth $4,000. Paid 0.5 ETH in gas fees and 2.5% platform fee.
Calculation:
- Initial investment: 50 ETH × $3,000 = $150,000
- Sale value: 70 ETH × $4,000 = $280,000
- Platform fee: 2.5% of $280,000 = $7,000
- Gas fees: 0.5 ETH × $4,000 = $2,000
- Total costs: $7,000 + $2,000 = $9,000
- Net profit: $280,000 - $150,000 - $9,000 = $121,000
- ROI: ($121,000 / $150,000) × 100 = 80.67%
Example 2: Unsuccessful Trade
Scenario: Bought an NFT for $2,000 (0.8 ETH at $2,500/ETH). Sold it for $1,500 (0.6 ETH at $2,500/ETH). Paid $50 in gas fees and $30 platform fee.
Calculation:
- Initial investment: $2,000
- Sale value: $1,500
- Total fees: $50 + $30 = $80
- Net loss: $1,500 - $2,000 - $80 = -$580
- ROI: (-$580 / $2,000) × 100 = -29%
Formulas & Algorithms
The calculator uses the following formulas to determine profit/loss:
1. Currency Conversion
All values are converted to USD for consistent calculation:
- If purchase is in ETH: Purchase USD = Purchase ETH × ETH price at purchase
- If sale is in ETH: Sale USD = Sale ETH × ETH price at sale
2. Fee Calculations
- Gas fees in ETH: Gas USD = Gas ETH × ETH price at sale
- Platform fees:
- If percentage: Fee USD = (Sale USD × Percentage) / 100
- If fixed in ETH: Fee USD = Fixed ETH × ETH price at sale
- If fixed in USD: Fee USD = Fixed USD
3. Profit/Loss Calculation
Net Profit/Loss = Sale USD - Purchase USD - Total Fees USD
4. ROI Calculation
ROI % = (Net Profit/Loss / Purchase USD) × 100
5. ETH Calculations (if applicable)
ETH Profit/Loss = (Sale ETH - Purchase ETH - Gas ETH - Platform Fee ETH)

FAQ Section
This is required when you're mixing ETH and USD values in your transaction. For accurate USD calculations, we need to know the ETH-USD conversion rate at the time of sale to properly account for all fees and profits in a common currency.
Percentage-based platform fees are calculated on the total sale amount. For example, if you sell an NFT for $1,000 with a 2.5% platform fee, the fee would be $25 (2.5% of $1,000).
You can estimate gas fees based on the transaction type and network conditions at the time. For Ethereum mainnet transactions, typical gas fees range from 0.005 ETH to 0.05 ETH depending on network congestion. Leaving it at 0 will give you profit/loss without gas fees considered.
Currently, the calculator only supports ETH and USD. For other cryptocurrencies, you would need to first convert your purchase price to ETH or USD equivalent at the time of purchase for accurate calculations.
No, this is a single-transaction calculator. For multiple purchases (like averaging down), you would need to calculate your average purchase price first before using this tool.
While this calculator can help determine your profit/loss for individual transactions, always consult with a tax professional for official reporting. Tax rules for NFTs vary by jurisdiction and may include additional considerations like capital gains.
Some wallets may only track the ETH amount difference without considering fees or currency fluctuations. This calculator provides a more comprehensive view by including all costs and proper currency conversions.
